Philadelphia Union Return to Their Roots With 2022 Home Kit

Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union is getting back to its roots in a way with their new home kit for 2022.

The club unveiled its new jersey – nicknamed the “For U” kit – on Wednesday morning. The navy blue shirt features a lighter “signal blue” stripe bordered with gold running down the left side, under the club crest. This harkens back to the club’s original kits, which had a gold stripe down the centre of the shirt.

The Adidas logo and shoulder stripes, the front sponsor logo, and the trim on the V-neck collar and sleeve cuffs are all gold.

A gold lightning bolt appears on the back collar, “a nod to both Ben Franklin’s kite and key experiment, and our 2021 [away] kit,” according to the club’s website. The snake from the club crest is isolated and printed in gold in the jock tag position.

A video released as part of the unveiling shows the shirt paired with navy blue shorts and socks, as well as names and numbers printed on the back in gold.

“The ‘For U’ kit features a new take on the classic Union center stripe that was part of the inaugural kit,” said club creative director Shaun Kreider in the announcement on the team website. “In wanting to recognize the city and the fans that have been the lifeblood of this club, the stripe, gold on our inaugural kit, is now a bold signal blue, drawing on the colors of the Philadelphia flag and the club’s supporters. The stripe has also moved to sit over the club crest on the upper left of the kit, directly over the heart as a symbol of our emotional link to our city and our fans.

“This kit helps us honor our legacy while representing the club’s growth from a grassroots, fan-led movement to an established, perennial contender.”
