Phillies to Wear “Boring” Grey Unis Less Often, Alternate Reds Instead

The Philadelphia Phillies are growing tired of wearing nothing but their grey uniforms on the road.

“I think wearing grey all the time is just boring,” Phillies right fielder Bryce Harper told MLB.com reporter Todd Zolecki. “We’ve been talking about it as a team. We took it up the ladder and talked to people about it and they said, ‘Hey, let’s give it a try.'”

Philadelphia switched to grey uniforms on the road in 1989, Mike Schmidt’s final season. In the (approx) 2,500 road games they’ve played since the switch, the Phillies have worn grey for nearly every single one, save for the occassional “Turn Back the Clock” game or the league-wide Player’s Weekend promotions that have occured here-and-there.

To solve the team’s issues with their suddenly stale suits, the Phillies have committed to wearing their rarely-seen red alternate jerseys for two upcoming road contests, Wednesday’s game at Dodger Stadium and then again on Sunday in San Francisco. According to the MLB.com story, the team will then mix them into the road rotation for the remainder of the 2021 season.

“A lot of teams do it, they go on the road, they wear their blues or they wear their black or whatever they have,” Harper continued in the story. “I know as a team we thought we wanted to do something different. The red jersey is definitely a fit.”

If I may be so bold to suggest something to the Phillies, next time you head out on the road, pack your throwback powder blues. They were your road colours for nearly 20 years afterall, and I think we can all agree they’re certainly far more interesting than the greys or even the reds for both the players to wear and the fans to see. Give it a shot, it’ll work out well.
