Portland Sea Dogs to play a game as Maine Whoopie Pies

Is minor league baseball big enough for two Whoopie Pie–based temporary rebrands? We’ll find out this summer. For the last two seasons, the Reading Fightin Phils have played their annual morning game as the Reading Whoopies, and today, the Portland Sea Dogs announced that they’ll play a game this season as the Maine Whoopie Pies.

Both areas lay claim to important Whoopie Pie heritage. The folks in Reading will tell you that the origins of the treat date back to central Pennsylvania’s German settlers in the 1800s. But Maine has its own history with Whoopie Pies, so much so that the state legislature designated the Whoopie Pie the official state treat in 2011, the same year the world’s largest whoopie pie, weighing over 1,000 pounds, was made in South Portland.

The Maine Whoopie Pies take the field June 21 against—who else?—the Reading Fightin Phils. The game is part of the area’s Maine Whoopie Pie Weekend, which also includes the Maine Whoopie Festival June 22.
