What happens when Justin Bieber and Martha Stewart get together? You’d never guess the answer involves us seeing new hockey jerseys.
Courtesy of an Instagram post from M. Diddy herself, we see Stewart posing with Bieber wearing a black, previously unseen Toronto Maple Leafs jersey as the Canadian singer celebrated his 28th birthday at Sushi Park Restaurant in West Hollywood.
Is it too late now to say sorry?
The jersey shows the Maple Leafs current logo in black with white (and possibly silver?) elements. The NHL shield is around the collar, as is the familiar Adidas Adizero patterning on the shoulders. Aside from a blue stripe on the right sleeve, not much else is seen.
Here’s a closer look:
This could be a fashion jersey, or maybe it’s a rejected design for the Heritage Classic? As for the fashion jersey possibility, we haven’t seen those on the authentic Adidas NHL cut yet.
Maybe it’s legit, if so it follows a trend the Leafs have been rolling along with for new uniform designs lately — the primary colour of a logo matching that of the base of the jersey on which it resides. The Reverse Retro design from last season was a blue leaf on a blue jersey, the Heritage Classic uniform they’ll wear next week has navy blue lettering on a navy blue jersey… and now, perhaps, black leaf on a black jersey.
It would certainly be a departure in terms of colour scheme for the 104-year old franchise. The Leafs have exclusively worn blue as their primary colour since they adopted the Maple Leaks moniker in 1927; the only exception occurring while wearing green for throwback uniform games marking the club’s time as the Toronto St. Patricks from 1919-1927.
We’ll be keeping an eye out on this story, but you already knew that.
