With international matches dominating the summer soccer schedule in the leadup to the next World Cup, German sportswear company Puma dropped a huge number of new national team kits on Monday.
In all, the company officially released new home jerseys for 10 national teams on Monday, May 30, including five of the six countries they sponsor who will compete in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar starting in November.
Let’s a closer look at the new kits in alphabetical order:
EGYPT
The black stripes on the front of Egypt’s new red home kit are meant to symbolize the country’s seven Africa Cup of Nations championships, including the inaugural tournament in 1957 and three straight between 2006 and 2010. (Even though there are eight pinstripes? Or are they counting the space between the pinstripes as stripes? I’m very confused and I will update this story if I find out more.) The V-neck collar and sleeve cuffs both feature white and black striping.
GHANA
Ghana is keeping it simple with their new home kits for Qatar. The predominantly white kit has red, yellow and green trim on the sleeve cuffs and a yellow collar insert. The Ghana Football Federation logo sits on the left chest, while a black star — lifted from the national flag and symbolizing the team’s nickname, the Black Stars — appears in the middle of the chest.
ICELAND
Iceland’s men’s team won’t be wearing these new home kits in Qatar, but their women’s team will wear them this summer in the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 tournament, hosted by England. (UPDATE: The women’s team will actually wear a different version of this kit in Euro 2022, with a navy blue floral pattern replacing the solid rectangle down the left side. More details here.) The kit is predominantly royal blue, with a vertical navy blue block running down the left side and under the crest. Inserts at the front and back of the V-neck collar are red.
ITALY
Though they won’t be in Qatar, the Italian national team will still look classy for the next year or so. Their new home kit features tonal blue quarters on the front, plus red, white and green trim on the crew neck collar. It will be worn for the first time on June 1 when Italy takes on Argentina at Wembley Stadium for the Finalissima. This is the last home kit Puma will produce for Italy before Adidas takes over as the country’s supplier in 2023.
IVORY COAST
Ivory Coast’s new orange home kit features tonal vertical stripes that don’t extend all the way to the shoulders or hem, along with a white V-neck collar and white stripes on the sleeve cuffs. It’s a nod to the Ivory Coast team that won the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations, beating Ghana on penalty kicks to give the country its first continental championship.
MOROCCO
Morocco’s home kits for Qatar are predominantly red, with a green block bordered in white running across the chest, under the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football logo on the left chest and broken up by a Puma logo mid-chest. The sleeve cuffs and V-neck collar are green. The design is inspired by the country’s kits in the 1998 World Cup.
PARAGUAY
The new Paraguay home kit evokes the 1979 team that won the Copa América. The red and white vertical stripes on the body of the jersey continue on to the sleeves, while the crew neck collar and sleeve cuffs also feature red and white stripes. The Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol logo sits on the left chest.
SENEGAL
Senegal give a nod to their 2002 team with their new home kits. That was the first time Senegal appeared in the World Cup; they beat defending champions France in their first group game and eventually bowed out in the quarterfinals. A yellow chevron bordered in green and red runs across the chest of the white kit, with a green star in the middle to mimic the Senegalese flag. Red, yellow and green trim is also found on the V-neck collar and sleeve cuffs.
SWITZERLAND
Switzerland heads to Qatar in a retro-styled kit meant to honour the teams of the mid-1990s that brought the nation to football prominence. The kit is red with lines of varying widths running across the shoulders. The red V-neck collar includes some white trim. The Swiss flag sits on the left chest, while the Swiss Football Association logo appears on the right chest.
URUGUAY
Uruguay’s new home kit for the World Cup is a throwback to the country’s original golden age of football. Between 1917 and 1930, Uruguay won four Cope América titles, two Olympic gold medals and the first-ever World Cup. The shirt is Uruguay’s signature shade of light blue, adorned only with white sleeve cuffs and a white button-up collar.
The only country headed to Qatar for whom Puma did not officially release a kit Monday is Serbia. That country’s kit is expected in the coming weeks, along with new jerseys for Czechia and Austria.
