Winnipeg’s Canadian Football League team is really putting the “blue” in “Blue Bombers” with their new alternate uniforms.
The Blue Bombers unveiled the new uniforms during a fan event at their home stadium, IG Field, on Thursday, April 28. The jersey is the Bombers’ signature shade of royal blue, with the team’s white “W” primary logo bordered in gold taking up most of the real estate on the front.
Two broad gold stripes run over each shoulder, represented the Bombers’ back-to-back Grey Cup wins in 2019 and 2021 (the 2020 CFL season was not played due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
“It’s definitely different than what I’m used to being a Bomber, but I like the change-up,” slotback Nic Demski told the team’s website. “You want something different in an alternate jersey. I’m excited to put the new blue on and I’m ready to rock in them.”
Small white player numbers appear on the left side of the front of the jersey, over the heart, as well as on each sleeve. An advertising patch is placed on the front right side. Player names and numbers appear as usual on the back of the jersey in white.
The pants are also solid blue — a departure from the Bombers’ usual gold pants both at home and on the road. They too feature two gold stripes running down each side, and a white “W” logo on the right hip.
The socks that round out this uniform set are also blue. In fact, the only part of the set that isn’t blue is the helmet — the Bombers are sticking with their usual gold shell, with blue and white stripes down the middle and a white “W” logo bordered in blue on each side.
“Over the last few years what has become pretty special on game days is looking up at a sea of blue in the stands,” Blue Bombers president and CEO Wade Miller said at the unveiling. “It’s our hallmark, especially after years of the club moving away from the classic royal blue.
“We didn’t want to take away from that by introducing another primary colour for these uniforms. In fact, we wanted to really embrace it from head to toe. We wanted to create an instant classic; a jersey that really embraces our long history as a club, a jersey that feels timeless but also modern and clean.”
The uniforms were designed by Bombers creative director Rhéanne Marcoux, in collaboration with the league’s uniform manufacturer, New Era.
The Bombers will wear the new alternate uniforms twice during the 2022 CFL season, both times at home. They’ll make their on-field debut on August 11 against the Montreal Alouettes — who themselves unveiled a new helmet design earlier in the week — and in the annual Banjo Bowl game against the Saskatchewan Roughriders on September 10.
