QMJHL Begins a New Era with a New Logo for 2021

After celebrating their 50th anniversary season in 2019-20, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League figured it was time for something new. Nothing too new, mind you, just a little freshening up.

This morning the league unveiled it’s new, modernized league logo for the upcoming 2020-21 QMJHL season. The logo retains the French version of its official abbreviation LHJMQ (Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec) and its overall ice skate shape but has removed one of the skate’s blades and spaced out the letters more. The lettering also now features sharp corners rather than rounded.

Take a look:

“After the 50th anniversary, we felt that we needed to begin a new chapter in the league’s history,” said QMJHL Commissioner Gilles Courteau. “Designing a new brand is certainly always exciting, but we wanted to avoid a complete redesign of our logo. That’s why we decided to modernize the skate-shaped logo instead of completely changing the league’s brand identity.”

It’s the first change to the league’s logo since 1998 and the sixth logo used since their inaugural season in 1969. It was designed in collaboration with Nabi, an agency based out of Drummondville, Quebec.

The QMJHL is one of three top-tier major junior hockey leagues in Canada, making up the Canadian Hockey League along with the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), and Western Hockey League (WHL). It has produced such legendary players over the years as Guy LaFleur, Mario Lemieux, and Mike Bossy.
