RiverDogs honour beloved vendor, to play as Boiled Peanuts

The Charleston RiverDogs, Single-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, are the latest minor league baseball team to adopt a local food specialty as a temporary brand tonight.

The nickname Boiled Peanuts is in part an homage to a squishy snack food that traces its roots to the 19th century in the southern United States (and that is the official snack food of South Carolina), and in part a tribute to longtime and beloved RiverDogs vendor Anthony Wright, known best as Tony the Peanut Man, who passed away at age 63 after the 2016 season.

The logo, designed by Dan Simon of Studio Simon, features a peanut in a pot of boiling water wearing a sweetgrass hat favored by Tony the Peanut Man. The team will wear specialty uniforms with peanut patterns on the brim of the cap and the sleeves of the jerseys.

“We knew that if we were going to supplant our long-time namesake for a game,” said General Manager Dave Echols. “We wanted to choose something that holds significance to our fans and the region and the ‘Boiled Peanuts’ to us does just that. We hope this is a night to celebrate a Charleston tradition and continue to pay tribute to Tony and his family.”

The RiverDogs will donate a portion of Boiled Peanuts merchandise sales proceeds to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
