San Antonio Spurs Celebrate 50 Years with New Throwback Uniform in 2023

In honour of their upcoming 50th anniversary season, the San Antonio Spurs will turn the clock back to some of their first years in the Alamo City.

Worn initially from 1974 to 1982, the Spurs’ new Classic Edition uniform for the 2022-23 season was part of the club’s identity for their second season in San Antonio. It then made the journey along with the team as they left the American Basketball Association for the NBA in 1976 and then worn for their first four NBA division titles.

“The Spurs Classic Edition uniform is a symbolic way for us to honour our legacy, players and loyalty to the city of San Antonio while giving our fans what they’ve been asking for – we hear you,” said Becky Kimbro, VP of Brand Engagement for the San Antonio Spurs in the press release. “Our team has been working for two years to make this jersey possible for our 50th anniversary, and we hope our fans are just as excited as we are to see it on the court, once again.”

The uniform is black with silver, white, and black trim around the collar and each arm. “SAN ANTONIO” is arched across the chest in black with white trim (the original black on black??), the player’s number below in the same colourway. The shorts are black with a matching striping pattern on the waistband and at the knees, a silver diamond shape cuts out each side of the shorts with the team’s spur-“U” logo within.

San Antonio says the new throwback uniform will be worn for “select games” at home and on the road during the upcoming 2022-23 NBA season.

In eight seasons across the ABA and NBA with this uniform, the Spurs went a combined 386-274 for an impressive .585 winning percentage. Star players who wore this uniform include Hall of Famer George Gervin, all-time ABAer James Silas, and Larry Kenon, who set the NBA’s single-game steals record of 11 while wearing this design at Kansas City in 1976.
