San Diego State will celebrate its 100th season of football this fall with a commemorative logo, which will appear on the left shoulder of the Aztec’s uniforms.
“The celebration of our 100th season of Aztec football is not just about our current players,” athletic director John David Wicker said. “It’s about our past players. Those who have built the legacy to get us to where we are today. It’s also about a celebration for our future players.”
The logo is rather straightforward, as it features a large “100th” at the top with a ribbon containing “SEASON” and the year below it. There’s also a football and an inverted-arched “AZTECS FOOTBALL” at the bottom.
This fall also marks the opening of Snapdragon Stadium, San Diego State’s new 35,000-seat on-campus venue. The stadium and the patch will make their debut when the Aztecs host Arizona on Sept. 3 (3:30 p.m. ET on CBS).
“This is a big year for Aztec athletics, this is a big year for San Diego State University and, most importantly, this is a big year for Aztec football,” Wicker said. “The hype is real. We are bringing football back to campus … I’m excited for our coaches, our staff and our student-athletes to have the opportunity to run out on that field and have a true home-field advantage.”
San Diego State played its home games at San Diego Stadium – also known as Jack Murphy Stadium, Qualcomm Stadium and SDCCU Stadium, the former home of the NFL’s Chargers and MLB’s Padres – from 1979 until it was demolished to make way for Snapdragon Stadium.
The then played the 2020-21 seasons at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif. – 113.7 miles away from campus – while the new stadium was being built.
