Spurs, Raptors Among Seven New NBA Jersey Leaks

Welcome to this morning’s episode of “Today in NBA Uniform Leaks”.

At some point, you have to wonder if this is all intentional… Another seven NBA uniforms leaked over the past 24 hours, a couple we had seen before (but now have a much better look at) while most are all new to us.

Today’s roster: the San Antonio Spurs, Milwaukee Bucks, Washington Wizards, Toronto Raptors, New York Knicks are all new, and a closer look at previously leaked Golden State Warriors and the LA Lakers are all featured below. Of course, before we start, we gotta give props to Twitter user @camisasdanba who is responsible for just about all of these leaks.

SAN ANTONIO SPURS NEW “CITY” JERSEY

A refreshing update for the San Antonio Spurs who had stuck to a rather boring silver and grey camouflage design in previous years. A splash of colour this year breathes life into the otherwise unexciting uniform set.

Throwing back to the team’s “Fiesta” era during which their logo included a splash of teal, pink, and orange (despite their uniforms remaining black and silver) during the 1990s. We also get an updated team wordmark across the chest, scripted with the spur dotting the “i” in San Antonio. A glimpse at a potential full-time jersey update in the future? I sure hope so, on first glance this uniform looks great, can’t wait to see it on the court paired with the shorts, high hopes for this one.

TORONTO RAPTORS NEW “CITY” JERSEY

Could it be? Two decent surprises back to back here? The Toronto Raptors fulfill their contractual obligations (I’m kidding) by introducing this year’s Drake-inspired black-and-gold uniform but do so while throwing back to the club’s original wordmark style for the “Toronto” script across the chest.

Yes, the Raptors will wear a “Toronto” uniform this season. Appropriate, considering it’s called the “City” uniform afterall. Love that new underscore below the wordmark too… imagine if the Raptors introduced a black and red (or purple?) version of this script across their whole set this season instead of the chevron? I think people would’ve loved it. Alas, it’ll just have to do as the 2021 City uniform. Another thumbs up from me.

NEW YORK KNICKS NEW “CITY” JERSEY

Well, all good runs have to come to an end… this is not good. The New York Knicks here doing as the New York Knicks do and disappoint. The jersey is black and features an orange-to-blue-to-black gradient up each side, on the chest is a bizarre roundel treatment that reads “CITY NEVER SLEEPS NEW YORK KNICKS” (what’s the inspiration here? is it a NYC sewer cover?). The player’s number resides inside this circle with another gradient on the drop shadow.

In the upper right corner, the Nike logo has an “NYC” logo on it, which I can get behind — if the manufacturer’s mark has to be there, let’s have fun with it where we can. I’ve been told this jersey is inspired by the New York-based fashion brand KITH, we’ll need to wait for more details on that before we truly understand what happened here.

MILWAUKEE BUCKS NEW “CITY” JERSEY

So… Greece? Yes, this new Milwaukee Bucks jersey appears to be moving away from the City of Milwaukee and instead focusing on Greece, the home of the team’s star player (and soon-to-be free agent) Giannis Antetokounmpo. I mean, if a team made a uniform just for me I’d probably want to keep playing for them too.

The jersey (shown here as a jersey t-shirt, or “shirsey”) is light blue with white lettering and numbering, “Milwaukee” shown diagonally across the chest and a subtle marbled effect within the player numbers on the front and back. Overall, the design isn’t bad, (assuming it is indeed a tribute to Greece) it just seems to have nothing at all to do with the Bucks history, colours, logos, nor anything to do with the City of Milwaukee.

WASHINGTON WIZARDS NEW “CITY” JERSEY

Has anyone ever gotten excited about a new Washington Wizards jersey? With a name like that they sure could have fun with it, instead every year it’s “Hey, did you know we play in the capital?”. Yes, we do. Now change the name of the team if this is all you care to base your uniforms and logos off of… (yes, the Raptors have been doing this for years, too)

The uniform is grey, on the chest is the team’s alternate “dc” logo (based off the club’s old Washington Bullets logo) and the stars and stripes from the American flag are up each side of the jersey. Yawn.

LOS ANGELES LAKERS NEW “CITY” JERSEY

Yes, we had seen this leak before… twice now, actually. But this is the first time we can really see the inspiration behind the jersey. Note the little graphic in the lower-left corner, it reads “LORE SERIES: Elgin Baylor”. Yes, the Lakers choose to honour a special player from their team’s history each year as their “City” jersey, previously we had the Kobe Bryant “Black Mamba” jersey (which returned last season as a tribute), there was also a Magic Johnson look. This year, as the tag suggests, it’s Elgin Baylor.

Baylor played for both the Minneapolis and Los Angeles Lakers for 14 seasons between 1958 and 1972, was an 11-time NBA All-Star, won the Rookie of the Year Award in 1959, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1977.

GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS NEW “CITY” JERSEY

Finally, another jersey we saw already. The Golden State Warriors throwing back to the late ’90s/early ’00s with this navy blue, yellow, and orange jersey with “Oakland” scripted across the front in a style similar to that same late ’90s look. An olive branch, perhaps, to their former home city? The team is trying to be very clear that they represent the entire Bay Area, not just their new home town of San Francisco.

In this higher resolution photo we can see that there is a phrase that’s been added up the yellow stripes, it’s hard to tell here but looks like it might say “WE BELIEVE” over and over again. This would be in reference to the “We Believe” jersey, a nickname that’s been applied to this design and was used when they surprised everyone by wearing it as a throwback for their last regular season game at the Coliseum in 2018-19.
