Stanford Cardinal Unveil 1970-71 Throwback Uniforms

The Stanford football program will wear a throwback uniform during Saturday’s game against Oregon that honors the 1970 and 1971 teams that went on to win the Rose Bowl, as well as the 51st anniversary of quarterback Jim Plunkett’s Heisman Trophy season.

The uniforms pull inspiration from what the Cardinal – then known as the Indians – wore from 1967-76, with a white helmet featuring a small Block “S” logo on both sides, a single cardinal stripe down the center and a gray facemask.

The cardinal jersey includes television numbers on the sleeves and white cuffs alongside a traditional block number font on the front and back, while the white pants feature a thick cardinal stripe down the sides.

The uniform is complete with several throwback details, including the aforementioned Block “S” on the players’ towels, as well as black cleats with white laces and white socks.

The 1970 team ended its 19-year Rose Bowl drought with a 27-17 win over No. 2 Ohio State thanks to Plunkett, who threw for a then-conference record 2,714 yards and 18 touchdowns during on his way to winning the Heisman Trophy.

Stanford then returned to Pasadena the following year and knocked off No. 4 Michigan, 13-12, on a 31-yard field goal as time expired. The team finished 9-3, winning the Pacific-8 Conference in both seasons.

Kickoff for Saturday’s game between the Cardinal and Ducks is set for 3:30 p.m. on ABC.
