Stealth Mode: New York Jets to wear New All-Black Helmets for Three in 2022

Inspired by the look of a stealth fighter jet, the NFL’s New York Jets unveiled their new “Stealth Black” alternate helmet this morning.

With a matte black shell and chrome green facemask, the new Jets helmet will be paired with the club’s existing all-black jersey and pants combo. A small change to the team’s logo for use on this helmet is the addition of a thin white outline to help the green decal stand out better on the black background.

“Our alternate helmets are the definition of swaggy,” said Jets’ wide receiver Elijah Moore to their official website. “Definitely honoured to rock out in those.”

The Jets will wear their new all-black uniform combo for three games during the upcoming 2022 season: October 30 vs New England, November 27 vs Chicago, and December 22 vs Jacksonville.

“We have the best alternate helmet in the league,” said RB Michael Carter, again to NewYorkJets.com. “The Jets Fam is going to love it, and I’m so excited and blessed to help unveil it.”

The New York Jets first introduced black to their colour pallet from 1990 to 1997 by way of a black facemask and uniform striping, but it wasn’t until 2019 that the club wore a primarily black uniform on the field, then paired with a green helmet due to the NFL’s now-retired one-helmet rule.

“Our new uniforms are built to perform on the world’s biggest stage and are inspired by the toughness, grit, and resilience of the New York City area,” Jets team president Neil Glat said at the unveiling of their then-new look three years ago. “They are designed to be both modern and innovative and representative of our aspirations both on and off the field.”

At the end of the Jets’ coverage, the team may have, perhaps, given a hint at their future plans for additional styles:

The Jets will continue to be active with updates to their uniforms and several teams have already announced classic uniforms and helmets for the 2023 season.

Does this mean we’ll see a New York Titans throwback in 2023? Perhaps a return to the 1980s style for a game or two? I think we’re going back to the ’80s.
