According to team reporter Jim Wyatt, the Tennessee Titans will wear Oilers throwback uniforms this season – possibly during a home game against the Houston Texans.
“The plan is to wear them for a home game in 2023,” Wyatt said. “The exact game is still TBD, but I’ve already said I suspect it will be for the game vs. the Texans. Wouldn’t that make the most sense?”
Founded as the Houston Oilers in 1960 as part of the American Football League, the franchise spent 37 seasons in Houston before moving to Tennessee, where their nickname remained for the 1997-98 seasons before becoming the Titans in 1999.
Tennessee previously wore Oilers throwback uniforms four times in 2009 as part of the AFL’s 50th anniversary season, but they were based upon the original design, which featured a Columbia blue helmet with white oil derricks, a single white stripe down the center and gray facemask.
That includes the home version in the Hall of Fame Game against Buffalo in the preseason and a win over the Bills later in the year, as well as the road version in regular-season losses to the New York Jets and New England Patriots.
This time around, Wyatt said the Titans plan to honor the “Luv Ya Blue” era with white helmets, light blue jerseys and white pants. That look spanned from 1975-97, as the franchise only wore all-white uniforms during its final season as the Oilers in 1998.
Tennessee is now set to join the Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks and Tampa Bay Buccaneers with new throwback uniforms in 2023. The Cleveland Browns, Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions and Indianapolis Colts will add new alternate or throwback helmets, as well.
