If Gonzaga knocks off fellow No. 1 seed Baylor in tonight’s national championship at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, the Bulldogs will become the 11th team in the last 12 NCAA Tournaments to win the national championship while wearing white uniforms.
The list includes North Carolina in 2009 and 2017; Duke in 2010 and 2015; UConn in 2011 and 2014; Kentucky in 2012; Louisville in 2013; Villanova in 2018; and Virginia in 2019. The lone team over the last decade to win the title in its road uniform was Villanova in 2016.
Stretching back even further, the team in white has won 16 of the last 20 national championships, including Michigan State in 2000, Duke in 2001, Maryland in 2002, UConn in 2004, North Carolina in 2005 and Florida in 2007. The only teams this century to win the title in their road uniforms, in addition to the aforementioned 2016 Villanova squad, are Syracuse in 2003, Florida in 2006 and Kansas in 2008.
Of course, there was not an NCAA Tournament last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. But following that trend, there’s a good chance Gonzaga brings home the title tonight.
Tipoff for the 2021 Final Four is set for 9:20 p.m. on CBS.
