Urban Art Mixes With Traditional Themes on New Charly Third Kits for 5 Liga MX Clubs

First, it was lucha libre. Then it was traditional Mexican art, then Call of Duty. Now, sportswear manufacturer Charly is reaching to another source of inspiration for the new third kits for the five Liga MX clubs it outfits.

Charly unveiled the kits for León, Atlas, Santos Laguna, Pachuca and Xolos on Wednesday, December 4, and they’ll be worn during the clausura — or second half — tournament of the Liga MX season. This season, they’ve partnered with Metzican, a design studio based in Toluca, Mexico, whose goal according to their Facebook page is “to grow, strengthen and project the beautiful Mexican culture through urban art and illustration” (translated to English by Google).

Each of the five kits depicts traditional Mexican motifs interpreted through Metzican’s modern urban art lens. The style of the art of the kits mirrors Metzican’s work on murals all over the world, although the colors are more muted to maintain one predominant color on the jerseys and reduce the chances of clashing with an opponent.

Here’s a look at each of the kits, along with what Charly had to say about each in the descriptions on their online shop:

ATLAS FC

With a bold design full of symbolism, this jersey captures the spirit of Los Rojinegros and pays homage to their rich history. The design features the central figure of the Greek Atlas with a plume that integrates the architecture of the Guadalajara Cathedral, symbolizing the weight and grandeur of the stadium, while the ball in the center highlights the connection between sport and passion. Behind it, a pair of artisan-style foxes howl skyward, merging with the Atlas arms, representing the union between the team and the strength of La Academia. The fox collar features a texture that refers to the upper seats of the Teatro Degollado, adding a touch of cultural detail that enriches the design.

CLUB LEÓN

The jersey design highlights La Fiera and its fans, represented with lion warrior helmets that cheer with strength and passion. Accompanied by hot air balloons on the earrings, they refer to one of the representative elements of the city. Among the fans, an abstraction of the aerial view of the emblematic “El Glorioso” Stadium is shown, while at the top is the Arco de la Calzada, an icon of León, which becomes the king’s crown, evoking the “King of the Jungle”. The design is complemented by geometric shapes that represent the dynamism and movement of the players on the [pitch].

CF PACHUCA

This design reflects the competitive spirit of the team, celebrating its deep connection with the fans and highlighting the identity of the Pachuca Tuzos. Artwork that takes the team’s pseudonym and mascot as its main element, the jersey captures the essence of their energy, and the determination that characterizes this winning team. El Tuzo stands like a guardian over the stadium, with an imposing stance and victorious attitude. Subtle details in the design inspired by blizzards honor La Bella Airosa in harmony with Atlante provide a unique touch of identity. The artwork culminates with the seven stars that represent the club’s historical achievements, reflecting its greatness and the passion of its fans for each of its successes.

SANTOS LAGUNA

The jersey’s artwork is inspired by one of the club’s most important adjectives: LOS GUERREROS, an adjective that represents the strength, determination of the board and players, as well as the constant support of the fans, always steadfast in the pursuit of new achievements. In addition, the design celebrates the Santosmania, which has become popular and continues to fight. Projected from the emblematic TSM Stadium, it exudes celebration, joy, teamwork and glory. This jersey pays homage to the unique connection between players and fans, all united for the same goal. Elements from the area, such as Sarabia’s plane and the Mexican finch representative of the region, complete the design, reflecting the identity and power of Los Guerreros.

CLUB TIJUANA XOLOITZCUINTLES DE CALIENTE

The Xoloitzcuintle as the main character of this design that symbolizes the club, stands out in a bold posture, radiating the intensity and energy that characterizes the team on the field. The left ear is transformed into the silhouette of the Arco de la Revolución, paying homage to the architecture and history of Tijuana, while the necklace features three key elements that represent the identity of the club and the city: the number 333, considered an amulet by the club; the CECUT pendant that highlights the cultural value of Tijuana; and the Torre de Agua Caliente, one of the most iconic points of the city. In addition, the front of the Caliente Stadium is incorporated into the design, as a reminder of the team’s home, a place full of history and victories, expressing a strong sense of belonging and connection to La Jauría. The design also includes organic shapes that evoke the fire of El Mictlán, adding a powerful and intense atmosphere that highlights the unbreakable spirit of the Xolos.

The second legs of the 2024-25 Liga MX apertura, of first half, tournament semifinals take place this weekend, with Monterrey facing Atlético San Luis and Cruz Azul squaring off against Club América. The clausura tournament will begin in January 2025.
