Vertical Stripe Returns to Paris Saint-Germain’s 2022-23 Home Kit — Plus Unveilings from England, Germany, Italy

After a year away, the iconic center stripe will return to Paris Saint-Germain’s home kit in the 2022-23 season.

The French Ligue 1 powerhouses unveiled their new home kits on Wednesday, June 29. Like other high-profile European clubs outfitted by Nike, they will use the company’s new Vaporknit template, with a geometric pattern knit into the fabric.

The kit is mostly navy blue, with the club’s famous vertical stripe — this time a broad white stripe bordered in red — down the center. Before last year, PSG had worn in some iteration since the 1970s, and it’s closely associated with former club president and fashion designer Daniel Hechter.

The stripe is interrupted about halfway down to make room for the logo of PSG’s new shirt sponsor, Qatar Airways. They replace sponsor, ALL – Accor Live Limitless, a company that owns and manages hotels and resorts around the world.

The design “fuses tradition and modernity,” according to the club, “reworking a design that is well known at the Parc des Princes.”

SOUTHAMPTON FC – Home

While the centre stripe has returned to PSG’s home kit, it makes one of its first appearances on the home kit of Premier League side Southampton FC. Instead of the Saints’ usual red-and-white vertical stripes, this year they’ve gone for one broad vertical red stripe, bordered in black, running down the centre of the shirt. This, the club says, is inspired by “the flamboyant and free-flowing Saints side of the early ’80s.”

The rest of the front features a “contemporary geometric pattern taken from the iconic stanchions of St Mary’s,” the club’s home stadium. The raglan sleeves are solid white, with red Hummel chevrons running down each shoulder. The club crest and manufacturer logo are centered on the chest, and the crew neck collar is black with red trim.

NEWCASTLE UNITED – Third

After unveiling their home kit earlier this month, Premier League side Newcastle United have followed up with their third kit, manufactured by Castore, for 2022. It’s mostly white, with a green V-neck and sleeve cuffs that both have white trim. Sponsor logos and the club crest appear on the chest in one-colour green applications. “NUFC” is printed on the back collar in green, along with “130 Years” in green on the lower back.

This kit has garnered criticism since it leaked a few weeks ago since it seems to lift the colours of the Saudi Arabian flag. In October 2021, Newcastle United was sold to a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund for £305 million.

SCHALKE 04 – Home

After a year in the 2.Bundesliga, Gelsenkirchen-based club Schalke 04 are back in Germany’s top flight in 2022-23, and they have a new uniform supplier for the occasion. Adidas takes over from Umbro, and their first kit features a royal blue base and white accents. Those accents include white Adidas shoulder stripes, white underarm panels and white trim around the V-neck collar. Housing company Vivawest take over as the main shirt sponsor. “S04” is printed in white on the back collar.

Schalke 04 wore the new kits for the first time in a friendly against VfB Hüls on Wednesday.

FC AUGSBURG – Home, Away and Third

Schalke’s Bundesliga counterparts FC Augsburg unveiled all three of their new Nike kits on Tuesday, June 28, and wore the home kit in a friendly that same day against TSV Schwaben Augsburg. It is predominantly red, with white and green horizontal stripes across the front. The sleeves are solid red, while the crew neck collar and sleeve cuffs are white.

The away kit is mostly white, with a pattern of red stripes that vary in width on the raglan sleeves.

The third kit is grey, including the V-neck collar, with solid black sleeves. The logos on the chest, including the club crest, appear in one-colour black applications.

UNION BERLIN – Third

Meanwhile, Union Berlin were the third Bundesliga team to debut new kits in a preseason friendly when they wore their 2022-23 Adidas third kits against FC Viktoria 1899 Berlin on Wednesday. The kit is predominantly black, with small vertical lines across the front in red and grey. The V-neck collar and Adidas shoulder stripes are red, while the Adidas and sponsor logos appear on the chest in white.

ATALANTA – Home and Away

Italian Serie A side Atalanta want their players and fans to feel like superheroes in their home and away kits for 2022-23, made by Joma. The home kit uses the club’s traditional blue and black vertical stripes all over. The V-neck collar and sleeve cuffs are blue with black stripes running through the centre. The club crest is centered on the chest.

Meanwhile, the away kit is white with embossed pinstripes all over. On the left chest is a golden silhouette of the club’s namesake Atalanta, a female athlete from Greek mythology, that was part of their crest from 1963 to 1984 and was also on last season’s away kit. Blue and black blocks appear on each shoulder, and the sleeve cuffs are blue with black trim. The polo collar is mostly black, with blue on the underside and blue-and-black trim on the front.
