The Dallas Cowboys have made a small-but-significant change to their silver helmets for Monday night’s game against the Arizona Cardinals (8:15 p.m. ET on ESPN), adding a red stripe to their traditional blue and white-striped design.
The Cowboys originally added the red stripe to their helmets for the entire 1976 season to commemorate the bicentennial of the United States. The look then returned in 2021 as part of their annual Salute to Service game, which is typically their last home game prior to Veterans Day.
The Cowboys are 2-2 in the red-striped helmets since they were revived, including wins over the Indianapolis Colts in 2022 and New York Giants in 2023 and losses to the Denver Broncos in 2021 and Philadelphia Eagles in 2024. They went 11-4 during their original run in 1976, as well.

“The red stripe on the helmet provides a beautiful ribbon to wrap around this salute to those who currently serve our country’s military – and the patriotic love and appreciation that we all share for those who came before them,” Cowboys executive vice president and National Medal of Honor Museum Foundation chairman Charlotte Jones said in 2021.
This marks one of four different helmet designs for the Cowboys this season, joining their standard silver lids with blue and white stripes, white “Arctic Cowboy” alternate helmets and white throwback helmets, which will be worn against the Kansas City Chiefs on Thanksgiving.
